Permanent Installation for NCAD Students Union

In September 2008, The Students Union of the Irish National College of Art commissioned Andreas Kindler and myself to create a permanent light installation to celebrate extensive refurbishments that had been carried out on the college. The piece acts as a sign at the entrance to the Students Union offices and is constructed from wood and LED lights with variable programs.

Security Check was a durational intervention that took place at the enterance to the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, on the 9th of the 11th 2010. It consisted of a replica airport security check and metal detector with three actors, Kevin Fisher, Katalin Horvath and Anna McGrath acting as security guards. They were given the instruction to interrogate and search every person passing through the collage enterance for the duration of the piece.

In the leadup yo the event, I created a replica of the College website containing a warning to students to “carry their Student ID at all times and comply with checks and screenings.” I secretly requested a number of classmates to start a debate around the false website on the student union facebook page.

The intervention was completed as part of an exhibition in the college that evening, by the exhibition of the metal detector with an embedded video monitor displaying the intervention.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/144119/1977059/DSC_0461.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="1008" width_o="940" height_o="1415" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/144119/1977059/DSC_0461_o.jpg" align="left" />

Project Orbit, is an interactive multimedia installation created in collaboration with research chemist Dr. Daniel HT O’Donovan at Trinity College Dublin.
Responding to the commission; “Alternative Interpretations of the Periodic Table”, we’ve made a digital musical instrument that translates Mendelev’s table into musical notation. The sounds made on the instrument interact with a video feed. The video incorporates 3D forms rendered on software used by scientists to calculate “Atomic Orbitals”. Atomic Orbitals are mathematical functions that describe the probable location of an electron in a molecule. According to Heisenberg’s “Uncertainty Principle”, both the location and momentum of an electron cannot be simultaneously known. So the Atomic Orbital shapes act only as maps for where the electron could potentially be at any one time. When I asked Daniel to explain to me what exactly and electron was, he replied

“What is an electron? as in, what is the physical reality we are looking at? Well, we don’t know. But the hypothesis I follow is: that an electron is time.”

“Example: New Ways of Making and Presenting Visual Art” is a book and art piece designed and assembled by graphic-designer Malwina Ostrowska. It documents the exhibitions, events and residencies that took place in Exchange Gallery, a contemporary art space in Temple Bar, Dublin, which I co-founded and co-curated for one year between 2009 and 2010.

Exchange Dublin was initiated to create a space where ideas could be explored and expressed; where projects could be incubated, grow or fail; where processes can be investigated without the pressure of an end result.
How could the convention of a gallery space, a site of exhibition, be turned to emphasise engagement over consumption? Exchange Dublin is unique in that it is situated in highly developed, commercial real estate at the heart of Dublin's 'Cultural Quarter', but it intends to minimize the restrictions usually imposed on creative people who want to access such a space. In contrast to most institutions, you can't make money from it. So as a gallery, EG required artists to engage with a different agenda. Instead of showing work that was indifferent of to its surroundings, like objects in a shop window, can the gallery assume itself as a site of development? Could the space itself become a necessary function for each project to be realized? These were the questions we put to the fifteen artists and collectives who utilised Exchange Gallery between October 2009 and October 2010. This publication is a document of their answers.

The EG curatorial group functioned on a voluntary basis, and selected proposals from an open call or nomination every 3 months. EG facilitated residency-style occupations of the space for varying lengths of time. These often resulted in exhibitions, performances, gigs, workshops, screenings and other events. The gallery remained visible and open to the public throughout each occupation.
Exchange Gallery was set up initially by Jonah King and Andreas Kindler von Knobloch in October 2009. Roisin Beirne, Joseph Noonan-Ganley, Sam Keogh and James O’Haoda joined in as the project developed. The group’s enthusiasm to facilitate these projects provided the conditions for over 30 artists, theorists and musicians to develop, experiment, materialise and disseminate their work. After exactly one year a close curatorial collective had formed and we realised it was time to hand the space over to a new group of people. We continue to work on independent projects together under the banner of Example.

Exchange Dublin is a not for profit, all-ages collective arts centre founded by Andreas Kindler, Dylan Haskins and Jonah King in 2009. The centre is run by an open, hon-hierarchical collective and facilitates wide range of collective practices. The centre is in the heart of Dublin’s “cultural quarter”, Temple Bar and includes a gallery, venue for events, discussions, cinema and cafe.

The centre was founded on collectivist principals and intended as a reaction to a perceived culture of commercialism and individualism prevalent in Dublin.

Since the initial establishment of the space, the project has taken a life of its own with a network of over 4,000 people and is now managed and coordinated by dozens of people with events happening every day.

Following the success and of the OPW Art Collective, Food Not Bombs and CHANGE?, EXCHANGE DUBLIN was conceived as a reaction to the stiflingly commercial environment of Dublin’s inner city. The organizational structure for the centre was allowed to develop organically towards the goal of creating an open, non-hierarchical collectively run space that could facilitate all modes of creative expression. It is run entirely by volunteers and no one is paid for their input.

Exchange is now open seven days a week from 12 – 11pm, with a full time cafe, gallery with a new show every 2 weeks, at least one public event daily and a network of over 4000 people.

Manifesto:

Throughout the twentieth century and into the first decade of the twenty-first, from our universities to our communities and workplaces, a culture of competition has created a society of isolated individuals. We find it difficult to understand our neighbours and our purpose. Exchange Dublin creates a common public space for cross-disciplinary awareness, conversation and action.

Dublin is full of pockets of creative young people, some of whom are aware of each other but have no platform to engage with each other or their city. This space is intended to provide an infrastructure for inquiry, discourse and collaboration as an antidote to some of these problems.

This is a space for new ideas.
This is a space for connections.
This is a space for action.

Commissioned Internet Campaign for Irish Arts Council

FUTURE ARTS.ie is a web-based body of discussion emerging from the 2010 "FYI" Conference. An Arts Council initiative, the FYI event invited young people to come and discuss their views on cultural life and the arts, with their peers and with key policy-makers. The event took place in Dublin and included three days of arts-based workshops and discussions, concluding with a meeting between young people, arts policy makers, and government representatives.

Through Exchange Dublin, Eimear Fitzmaurace and myself were commissioned by the Irish Arts Council to design build and manage Future Arts. This included a website, discussion board, video spots and social networking programme. During the event, we documented and broadcast over three days through tweets, blog posts and live web-stream.

Live Video Performance / Event Construction

Over the past few years, I’ve been performing live video mixes (VJing) at events, festivals and club-nights in Ireland and around Europe. I addition to this, I’ve also constructed sets, club-night and festival environments, projection screen setups and kinetic video sculptures for audience participation at events.

Content for live video performances are composed mostly of self generated content, live video feeds and constructed generative hardware.

This project started as an attempt to build a complete kitchen within a supermarket trolley in a week. It became a calloborative weekly happening run by Jonah King and Andreas Kindler that lasted over a year.
Food not Bombs is a tactic used by activists to draw attention to the quantity of surplus food produced by a city.
We collected surplus food from supermarkets and restaurants around the city centre and served it publicly the next day. We were overwhelmed by the amount of food available, and the initial project created such a buzz that myself and Andreas began doing FNB weekly from March 2008. the project brought a diverse group of people together to cook and eat.
When we started the Office of Public Works later that year, the project grew much bigger. Every Thursday night from March 2008 until May 2009, we served free nutritious vegetarian meals to about 200 people from all walks of life.
We were keen to encourage people to question arbitrary nature of the market economy and its control over our necessities, but many people interpreted our project in different ways, including the large Taiwanese cult, ‘Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association‘ who made a documentary about us (below) and edited our interviews to make it sound like our aim was to solely promote vegetarianism.
